Thanks to lov3less’ blog entry on makeup brushes, i went to explore iherb.com and went on a mini spree! thank you for the $10 discount code babe!

So with my barely there self-control, i bought 9 items! they cost me about SGD$57

its only 5 days ago that i ordered and i cant believe its here so fast! oh shipping is SGD$4 flat by singpost. ROCKS!

IMG_6786

i love how US shipping is always so efficient! the box quite big hor.

Brushes!

YES – i got caught away with buying these ELF brushes and another Stippling brush from Real techniques – as recommended by lov3less 🙂

IMG_6788

DO YOU KNOW – that these ELF brushes are US$3 EACH????? Thats $3.75 SGD

and today during the watsons fair all these are selling at S$9.90. What audacity!!

im so glad im not so stupid anymore. i admited to buying 2 brushes from watsons before…… 😦

IMG_6789

This baby toothbrush is for my friend whom is preggers haha – random present

IMG_6792

i love how the big brushes come with a protective cover which is thick and sturdy plastic!

These are all Taklon brushes.

Taklon is the common name for a synthetic fiber used in artist-quality paint, makeup and pin stripe brushes. It is a smooth, soft, and somewhat fragile polyester derivative devoid of any protein component or allergen elements and is therefore used in the cosmetic industries as a “green,” “vegan,” “allergy free” or synthetic alternative to animal hair brushes.

IMG_6794

Actually i already have a stippling brush from MAC BUT it sucks to the max!
the hair always always drop out when i use it and its not 1 strand its a few strands! everytime i try to give it another chance more drop out. since so many fall out already, i shd know that there isnt much hair left to hold it tight and more is going to drop out soon since its no longer tight so… i have to buy another one..
Also, my only experience w stippling brushes is that they give me a very uneven streaky finish, and use 3 times the amount of product than if i use my fingers.
I dont know why everyone says its more defined and smooth and even finsih cos mine is always a disaster, even with a foundation brush from The BOdy shop.

SO i decided to give stippling brushes a second chance.. by buying another one. please let this be good.

IMG_6790
the ELF baked blush is also $3.75 SGD (OMG) seriously i feel i am saving money.
the lipstick is US$14. it is purely organic and natural etc so lets see.

Saving the best for the LAST!!!…

How to Lose Weight from Chubby Cheeks

Standard

This is the bane of my existence – my chipmunk cheeks. Although I heard many people tell me that it’s good to have chubby cheeks so I look younger, my chipmunk cheeks make me look and feel plumper.

I really wish that time can backtrack to last year when I lost some weight and my cheeks looked smaller. Now that married life agrees with me, the weight is starting to creep back. Oh well, I can’t complain about being happy so I decided to find some ways to resolve my body issues.

Thought I will share these facial exercises which I read from this page. It is kinda duh to say losing weight will help to lose the weight from the cheeks as well. So, I was really happy to see facial exercises I can do to help with the chipmunk cheeks.

1. Chew gum

“Not only can chewing gum calm your nerves and freshen your breath, but it can also help you lose weight from your cheeks. The repetitive chewing motion will help strengthen your jaw. The best part is, you won’t even feel like you’re doing an exercise. You can set a goal of chewing gum for just a few minutes after every meal.”

Verdict from Marie: In Singapore, we can’t exactly get gum (go Wiki it, we’re famous for our gum ban. Plus I am not a fan of gum so no go for me.)

2. Do the “X-O” exercise

“Profoundly pronounce “X-O” at least fifteen times. Take a break and repeat the exercise three times. This is an easy maneuver that will help you move your jaw in two different ways, which will strengthen your jaw and burn fat from your cheeks. You can do this exercise any time — even when you’re at your desk at work.”

Verdict from Marie: I tried doing it and boy did my cheeks ache from the X-O exercise. I will try to do it regularly and see the effects of this X-O exercise over time.

3. Do the jaw opener.

“Open your mouth round and wide and hold this pose for a few seconds. Then, relax your jaw and repeat this motion nine more times, for a series of ten repetitions. You can repeat this move three times a day. If you do too many of these exercises at once, your jaw may get sore.”

Verdict: I felt my jaw ache almost immediately after doing this so it’s a no go for me if I do this and end up having to Botox my jaw!

4Do the cheek lift

“Lift up your cheeks toward your eyes as high as you can. Use the corners of your mouth to help lift your cheeks. You should feel like you’re trying to form a strained, awkward smile. You can even shut your eyes tightly to help lift your cheeks.”

Verdict from Marie: This was my favourite exercise to do as I felt it was easy to do and kinda fun! I strongly recommend doing this in the comfort of your room where no one looks at you in a funny way.

5 Make “fish lips.

“Draw in your cheeks until you’re making fish lips by puckering out your top and bottom lip. Hold this position as you try to smile. Hold the smile for ten seconds and repeat the position for ten counts.”

Verdict from Marie: I felt that this felt very similar to the next exercise, Make Puffy Cheeks so I decided to alternate between this and MPC for variety. It’s a fish and a puffer fish, fish and a puffer fish for me. Again, do watch out for a sniggering husband at the corner when doing these exercises.

6. Make Puffy Cheeks

“Close your mouth and fill your cheeks and mouth with air. Then, move the air from one cheek to the other as slowly as you can. Move the air from one cheek to the other at least ten times, and take the time to fill your cheeks with air again if necessary. Repeat this exercise three times daily.”

Make Puffy Cheeks with Pursed Lips from http://www.wikihow.com/Lose-Weight-from-Your-Cheeks

7. Smile

” Smiling also exercises your facial muscles and will make you lose those chubby cheeks. You can just smile on your own, holding each smile for ten seconds and repeating this action ten times, or you can make a goal of smiling more in your daily life. Not only will this make you lose weight from your cheeks, but it can help you feel more positive throughout the day.”

Verdict from Marie: I thought it was my extensive smiling that gave me chipmunk cheeks. Strange…

8. Massage your cheeks after exercising

“After completing a series of facial exercises, gently rub your fingers over your cheeks and jaw in a circular motion. This will help relieve tension and soreness after exercising.”

Verdict from Marie: I think that rubbing fingers over cheeks and jaws in an indiscriminate way might end up tugging your skin so what I think might be a better idea is to do a lymphatic drainage massage that my facial therapist does. This should aid with easing water retention as well as massaging the aching facial muscles.

Hope this post can help like-minded people achieve a slim face or at least get to know how to go about doing it.

[Review] Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Collection

Standard

My love affair with Kiehl’s started in 2011, when I first bought the famed Kiehl’s lip balm for my chapped lips. I never looked back from then. It was undoubtedly the best lip balm I ever used. I had a tendency to have dry lips because of my eczema and I had some really nasty experiences with drug-store lip balms previously. I had allergic reactions that made my lips swell like an unattractive Angelina Jolie. These mysterious swellings made me really wary of lip balms. Kiehl’s was the only one which moisturised my lips, in summer and winter, with no swelling.

From then, I started experimenting with other products like the Midnight Recovery Serum and Ultra Facial Cream for night moisturizing as I sleep. I loved the Midnight Recovery Serum for its lovely lavender scent and its easy to apply texture. Although it is expensive (SGD$90), it lasted me for more than 1 year.

Recently, when I decided to do a skincare overhaul, I was contemplating brands like Laniege, Clinque and Biotherm. Then, I decided to walk into Kiehl’s and came out $200 poorer.

This is my loot.

Now you probably understand why I was $200 poorer, but let’s go into the products proper.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My daily skincare regime depends on these babies. I have combination skin but I was concerned about sleeping in a airconditioned room and having my skin shrivel like a prune. Also, I had clogged pores which made the oil-free property very much a necessity. The salesgirl mentioned that the cleaning property of the cleanser was so good it can leave the skin feeling a little rubbery. I like the rubbery feel as it feels really clean. Plus, the skin is restored very easily when the other products are applied. The moisturizer is a dream come true. I can feel the moisture going into my skin immediately and its light texture makes it suitable for day and night application. Of course, I discovered the sun screen and never went back to other brands. It definitely complements my skin care regime.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Both of these are samples which I had grown to use regularly and like quite a bit. The skin brightening exfoliator is used alternating with the cleanser and I like how the beads in the exfoliator are quite fine so I don’t feel that it’s tearing my skin. The Dark Spot Solution is perfect to combat possible age-related problems like dark spots. My sample is almost 1/2 gone after 2 months of use and I think I will go and get the actual bottle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My Midnight Recovery Concentrate and a new product, Line-Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate. The eye cream is recommended by the sales girl, when I commented I had a problem with fine lines and puffy eyes. There was another cream which she recommended for fine lines and dark circles (enhanced with Vit C) but I decided my puffy eyes are a bigger problem that the dark circles.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These were the samples Kiehl’s gave and they are certainly generous. They even provided me with some for men since my hubby was with me. For a man who loves fashion, my husband certainly don’t give two hoots about his skin. I am still in the midst of convincing him to use the products.

Two months after regular use, I feel that my skin tone is more uniform and my skin feels less dry. Although my pores are still clogged (I am so overdue for my facials), I am grateful that I found a brand of products that genuinely make a difference to my skin.

[Review] Innisfree Mineral Water Foundation

Standard

IMG_5762

I got this mineral water foundation in Korea last year for 15,000 won.

Was quite excited since i’ve never tried mineral make up and always wanted to try.

Personally i prefer foundation / bb cream that is watery in nature as they spread and blend easily, without leaving a cakey feeling.

IMG_5765

innisfree-mineral-water-foundation

I really like the water texture of this foundation, i think this is what a tinted moisturizer feels like (althuogh i have not tried)/

its probably the same thing if you ask me, just fancy names to vary the products.

it blends very lightly into my skin, and i use this every day if i am going out.
Coverage is not high, so dont expect to cover all your acne scars, but it does lighten them.
my skin feels moist and light after putting this and my face looks so naturally nude.

it also give off a healthy glow, and i dont have to put much powder to set the make up.

it comes with SPF15 PA+, which is not alot so i always use sunscreen as a base.

IMG_5766IMG_5767
can u see how watery it is..?
IMG_5768

here’s a comparison, i put this only on the left of the photo.
it covers imperfections naturally and skin tone is more even.

i would mind buying this again!

[DIY] Remove Gelish Nail Polish at Home

Standard

I love getting my nails done, but I always dread needing to go back to the salon to have it removed. Now many places charge for removal unless u have a package there. And many times, you’ll jus sucuumb to doing ur nails again since u are already there instead of doing the right thing and letting your nails rest (and saving some money). Only downside of doing it yourself is you can only do one hand at a time as opposed to both hands at the salon.

Watch this short video for step by step instructions

Your nails will be weaker after removal, so take care of them. After following the steps of the video, I continued with my nail care by buffing and applying a coat of OPI Nail Envy (read review here) and finishing with some cuticle oil.

[Review] Benefit They’re Real Mascara

Standard

Today I’m reviewing a highly raved about mascara despite being a loyalist to Dior Iconic Extreme (read review here)
So instead of doing a product review, I’m comparing the two mascaras to see which I like better.

s1343938-main-hero
A jet-black mascara that lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts, and separates lashes for a spectacular “out-to-here” look.

This breakthrough bestseller reveals lashes you never knew you had! The specially designed brush features staggered bristles that grab close to the root, boosting length and volume beyond belief. The custom-domed tip uses precision bristles to lift, define, and curl even your tiniest lashes. With a glossy, jet-black, long-wearing formula, you’ll flaunt luxurious, silky lashes that won’t smudge, clump, or dry out.

The staggered bristles grab close to the root, boosting length and volume. Then go vertical! The custom-domed tip with precision bristles lift, define, and curl even your tiniest lashes.

Research results:
In a consumer panel survey, the following results were reported:
– 94% saw dramatic length and volume
– 90% saw base-to-tip curl
– 94% saw visible lift
– 100% saw long-wearing results

Left: Dior Iconic Extreme

Right: Benefit They’re Real

20130610-185212.jpg
I’ve been dropping lashes (see gaps in the middle)

20130610-185218.jpg

Why I like Benefit They’re Real

  • Smudge proof
  • Lengthens well
  • Good volumizing power esp for my lower lashes
  • Separates lashes

What I don’t like about Benefit They’re Real

  • It clumps easily even for a new tube (pic doesn’t show that cos I kept dabbing off the clumps while they are still wet, leading to wastage)
  • Hard bristles that poke and irritate my waterline if I get to close to the base of my lashes
  • Harder to remove compared to Dior

It’s a tough fight but I would still stick to Dior Iconic Extreme. I’ve seen pics like this below but it’s SPIDERY LASHES.

996712_570451046333287_1478422139_n
I think from FARRR they look amazing but I do not like this look. It just looks like you OD-ed on mascara and it’s plan scary. BUT if you personally don’t mind and absolutely hate putting false lashes, I think They’re Real have indeed fantastic volumizing buildable power.

[Review] Chacott For Professionals

Standard

Back in my University days, I could get away with just some tinted sunblock & loose powder. My favorite back then was Chacott. I had a huge tub 170g and a huge powder puff to go with it. I loved it so much I even brought it with me to Paris for exchange. This is hard to come by as it is to my knowledge, only available in Japan. So when Fen had an extra tub, I was more than happy to buy it from her.

1301212537042187600

Yes, there are different shades and I was skeptical cos I like mine to be translucent and my tub back then was a white powder 753 (no ghostly finish I assure you). What I love about this is that it last! Oil control is superb and I hardle need to blot when I’m using this. The powder is also super fine to give my face that flawless airbrushed look.

30g

20130423-150349.jpg
So even though it isn’t the 753 that I’m used to. I’m surprise this “colored” powder isn’t all that different as I still have that translucent finish. Oh, the powder puff is sold separately and is different from the usual ones. Do pick it up if you are buying this product but for now I’m using my Sephora Kabuki 43 brush to apply this.

If you ever have the chance to buy this, please do it. Besides it’s very affordable..I think I paid Fen SGD18 for the 30g. The 170g is definitely super worth it, after 2 years I just threw it out cos I was afraid it was going to go bad. Can’t remember how much that cost.

[Review] Sephora PRO Kabuki #43 Brush

Standard

I don’t own many makeup brushes cos I don’t believe in buying cheap and often low quality brushes. ANd good quality ones are usually costly. This Kabuki brush would only be my 3rd makeup brush. First two being blusher & blending brushes.

Kabuki brushes became really popular when mineral makeup hit the stores. Their soft, yet dense bristles and tapered brush head, they are ideal for creating a lovely, flawless finish.

I needed a brush for my new loose powder which didn’t come with a puff and thought this kabuki would be perfect for that job.

20130423-150015.jpg

Sephora has two kabuki brushes. This is no. 43 brush that comes with a zipper pouch for easy storage. This is also the more expensive of the two.

20130423-150027.jpg
The soft bristles which I can’t tell if it’s natural or synthetic but I believe it is the latter.

20130423-150039.jpg
Comes with a clear plastic which I reuse to maintain the shape.

Retails SGD49 at Sephora
