[Review] Clarins Gommage Exfoliant Peau Neuve – Smoothing Body Scrub For a New Skin with Bamboo Powders

Standard

I love Clarins products. Yes, they are considered a splurge and somehow I ended up with this body scrub because my sister decided she didn’t want it (cos of the hefty price tag) after I have already bought it. Hmm, 50 bucks on a body scrub? I could probably find something much lesser, like my favourite Soap & Glory Flake Away (note: the recent tub I bought was of lesser quality somehow, very disappointing)

Exfoliating your skin is an essential step for a beautiful body and with Smoothing Body Scrub For a New Skin, it’s also a genuine skin renewing treatment. Thanks to a dual exfoliating and “conditioning” action, it eliminates a dull appearance and provides skin with all it needs to be beautiful. This is the result of a combination of natural bamboo powders and soothing and protective plant extracts.

To eliminate a dull appearance, Bamboo Powders & Moringa extract
Bamboo powders are microbeads of natural silica obstained from the substance collected from the plant stems. In perfect affinity with the skin, they have a gentle exfoliating action which eliminates dead skin cells and rough skin. The extract of Moringa – a tree from Africa whose seeds are used to purify water – removes accumulated toxins.

To provide it with all it needs to be beautiful, Mimosa Tenuiflora, Liquorice & Shea
Liquorice and Mimosa Tenuiflora, the Mexican “skin tree” recognised for its exceptional repairing benefits, soothe and protect skin against irritation. Shea maintains the balance of the hydrolipidic film and envelops skin in a delicate veil of softness, to ensure comfort for all skin types, even dry & sensitive skin.

To be used once or twice a week, on dry or damp clean skin. Massage in, concentrating on elbows, knees and heels. Rinse well with warm water.

I squeezed a little out onto my skin and there aren’t any visible exfoliating beads. Upon spreading and closer inspection, you can make out the fine bits. I think they must be the bamboo powders. It is densely packed with these beads, so you’ll get a good scrub leaving you with clean (no oily residue) smooth skin that is soft and bouncy to the touch. It’s somewhat like a micro exfoliant that is strong (irony). And like all clarins products, this smells heavenly.

25 Easy Ways to Lose Weight Fast

No-stress strategies that make shedding pounds as easy as pie.

Small Changes, Big Results

Despite what you may think, weight loss doesn’t have to entail deprivation and hours-long sweat sessions at the gym. Here, 25 easy-to-implement lifestyle changes that will help you slim down in a snap.

Downsize Your Dishes

Replace large dinner plates with smaller salad plates and you cut one-third of the calories in each meal, according to Milton Stokes, RD.

Reel in Weight Loss

Swap fish for beef or chicken twice a week. Fatty fish, such as salmon, contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, says certified wellness coach Jackie Keller. And one study found that people who ate fish for lunch, instead of beef, ate 11 percent fewer calories at dinner.

Start Walking

The neighborhood-waistline link is an emerging area of obesity research. One study found that people who live in the most walkable communities are on average six pounds lighter than those in the most sprawling suburbs.

End Automatic Eating

By midlife many long-term dieters have learned to rely on scheduled mealtimes—rather than their body’s signals—to decide when to eat. Just because the clock says 1 p.m., that doesn’t mean you need a big meal.

Shop the Perimeter

Challenge yourself to avoid the middle aisles of the grocery store—where most of the processed food products are usually located. Instead, shop primarily along the perimeter, where whole foods are stocked. By staying away from the center, you limit yourself to purchasing fresh produce, meat, seafood and dairy instead of frozen dinners, cookies, chips and more. This will make it easier for you to avoid temptations and to purchase healthy snacks, like fruits and vegetables.

Cut Back on Cocktails

Alcoholic beverages tend to be high in calories and may lower your inhibition, making you more likely to let down your nutritional guard. Opt instead for light hot chocolate or a cup of hot tea, both of which can help you keep your hands and mouth busy while socializing.

Trim the Fat from Your Meat

Although you’ll need some fat to enhance flavor, if there is excess fat on the edges of your protein, trim it off before cooking it. In doing so, you’ll not only reduce the overall amount of fat in your diet, you’ll also reduce the most harmful type of fat: saturated fat.

Put Your Workout In Your CALENDar

If you leave exercise to chance, you won’t fit it in. Make workout appointments that can’t be broken. Either carve out the same times every week and stick to that schedule or, if you don’t have a set routine, plan a week or even a month ahead.

Do a Little Something Energetic Everyday

Vow to do an activity that will get you breathing hard for at least 10 minutes, seven days a week. “Even if you just set the timer on the kitchen stove and vigorously clean the house or run up and down the stairs, you’ll do something good for your heart—and your waistline,” says Andrea Metcalf, a Chicago-based trainer.

Wake Up With Fiber

Study after study confirms that we eat less over the course of the day if we start with a good breakfast. And the one component that’s often missing is fiber. Try to include a complex carbohydrate, such as whole grain toast, or a high-fiber fruit or vegetable, such as raspberries, in your morning meal. It will help fill you up, making you less likely to graze the rest of the day.

Graze All Day

Eating five or six smaller meals instead of three larger ones can help prevent both hunger and overeating. Mini meals steady blood sugar levels, and slow down the release of insulin, a hormone that can cause your body to store more fat, explains Maye Musk, RD, a New York-based nutritionist.

Focus On Your Food

The more you grab meals on the go and then multitask, the easier it is to lose track of how much you’re actually consuming. Be more mindful when eating (feel the textures, inhale the aromas), because engaging your senses slows down the process, leaving you more satisfied.

Cook With Herbs

Add herbs instead of salt, butter or cheese. They make food more flavorful, without adding extra calories or fat.

Finish Eating By 8 PM

You will wake up feeling hungry so you’re ready for breakfast.

Shun Sugar-Free Foods

They often contain sugar alcohols, low-calorie sweeteners that linger in the intestines where bacteria ferment them, causing gas and bloating. Mannitol is especially known for this, but be sure to check a product’s ingredient list for any sugar alcohols-they commonly end in “tol.” If you’re concerned about calories, eat a smaller serving of the full-sugar version.

Revamp Your Rewards

When you’ve spent a week working overtime or have stuck to your workout goals for a month straight, it’s only natural to want to reward yourself. Just don’t do it with food, says Keller. Instead, treat yourself to something you want more, such as a massage or new party dress. “Deprivation is a real downer, but having a system of rewarding yourself for healthy behaviors will help reinforce it for you,” says Keller.

Pre-Cut Your Produce

With a hectic schedule, it’s easy to become dependent on packaged foods instead of fresh ingredients. Buy pre-cut produce, or take the time to cut it up some fruits and vegetables as soon as you get home from the grocery store. That way, when you’re pressed for time, you’ll have something healthy to add to soup, salads, scrambled eggs or stir fries. “Aim for 3 to 5 servings of fruit and 5 or more servings of vegetables daily,” says Keller.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

A cute dress can motivate you as much as a bikini. Keep an article of clothing that you’re dying to wear out—and look fabulous in—visible, says Keller. The daily reminder with help you stick to your dietary goals.

Snack on Sour Cherries

When University of Michigan researchers fed tart cherry powder to rats as a tiny portion of their diet, the animals lost 17 percent of their belly fat in just three months. Another trial with crushed blueberries also reduced fat. “In certain fruits there may be components, particularly anthocyanins—the antioxidants that create their dark colors—that have a protective effect,” explains Steven Bolling, MD, director of the University of Michigan’s Cardioprotection Research Laboratory.

Get More MUFAs

The south-of-the-border staple provides high doses of monounsaturated fats, or MUFAs (as do nuts, olives and flaxseeds). “Eating MUFAs can help prevent the deposition of fat around your middle,” says David Katz, MD, director of Yale’s Prevention Research Center. In Katz’s research, women who switched to a 1,600-calorie, high-MUFA diet shed a third of their belly fat in a month.

Guzzle Green Tea

Overweight and obese adults who sipped a sports drink with a high concentration of green tea extract every day and also followed a moderate exercise routine dropped 7.7 percent of their belly fat in three months, reports The Journal of Nutrition. By comparison, those who exercised the same amount and drank a regular sports drink lost just 0.3 percent of that fat. The assumption is that sipping regular green tea would have the same effect. While the exact mechanism is not yet known, green tea’s phytochemical compounds may speed up the body’s metabolic rate, trigger the release of fat and/or promote fat burning, speculates study coauthor Kevin C. Maki, PhD, chief science officer for Provident Clinical Research and Consulting, an independent clinical research site in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

Leave Serving Platters in the Kitchen

Location, location, location: In a Cornell University study, when serving plates and bowls were kept on a kitchen counter rather than on the table, women ate 10 percent fewer calories. There’s only a split second between experiencing the impulse to eat and then heaping second, even third, helpings on our plates, notes study author Brian Wansink, PhD, director of Cornell’s Food and Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think. “Keeping the platter away from the table interrupts this automatic feeding and provides enough of a pause that you ask yourself, ‘Am I really that hungry?’ Half the time, people say, ‘No, I’ve had enough’.”

Consider Coconut Oil

Found primarily in the meat of the palm, coconut oil is a medium-chain triglyceride that’s metabolized faster than other saturated fats—so fast, in fact, that digesting it burns more calories than the oil contains. In a study published in Lipids, Brazilian researchers gave women either soy oil or coconut oil supplements to take for three months. At the end of the study, both groups lost a weight, but only those taking the coconut oil had less abdominal fat.

Add an Acid

Dress steamed veggies with vinegar to boost your body’s ability to burn fat, suggests a new study. For six weeks, Japanese researchers fed two groups of mice a high-fat diet, supplementing one group’s intake with a daily dose of the main chemical in vinegar. Those who consumed the acetic acid developed less body fat than the ones who didn’t ingest it. In a follow-up study, people who downed three tablespoons of vinegar diluted into two cups of water daily experienced similar results after 12 weeks.

Say Sayonara to Excess Salt

Sodium is an essential nutrient that helps our bodies maintain the right balance of fluids, but most people are getting way too much, which can lead to water retention. Nearly 75 percent of the sodium Americans consume comes from processed foods, so choose fresh or frozen foods whenever possible, select unsalted nuts, seeds and beans, and stay away from the salt shaker: One teaspoon contains 2,300 mg of sodium—800 mg more than the maximum amount the American Heart Association recommends getting daily.

[Review] Laline Dead Sea Salt Body Scrub – Cherry Blossom

Standard

I got this lovely scrub from Hui as a gift 🙂 Thanks sweetie! I love surprise gifts from friends 🙂 This came beautifully wrapped as well but I’ve thrown the packaging away before snapping a few pics.

20121125-213620.jpg

Grape seed oil is nature’s finest resource for deep-cell nourishment. Vitamin E and avocado oil are vital for young-looking skin. Combined with granulated Dead Sea salts, our exfoliating body scrubs will remove dry and flaky layers, leaving soft, beautifully polished skin that sparkles and glows.

Directions: Apply the scrub onto wet skin and exfoliate, preferably while bathing, scrub well then rinse well.

Ingredients: Dead sea salt (Maris sal), Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus) Seed Oil, C 12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Grape (vitis vinifera) Seed Oil, Avocado (persea gratissima) Oil, Caprylic Capric Glycerides, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol & Caprylyl Glycol & Chlorphensin, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamine), BHT, Bisabolol, Mica (and) .Iron oxides

20121125-213629.jpg
The texture of this scrub is different from most i’ve used. When I scoop it out of the jar, it’s slippery and doesn’t stick easily to my fingers so i have to really scoop it out. Really feels like actual salt.

20121125-213642.jpg
I like my body scrubs to have a layer of oil when I wash it off, as I believe it’s more moisturizing that way. See the layer of oil and the consistency of the scrub.

It has a lovely fruity scent, supposedly of cherry blossoms but it smells like strawberries to me. Compared to Flake Away, its scent isn’t as strong and also doesn’t last as long.

20121125-213636.jpg
Made in Isael but you can check it out more over here. Also available in stores at Marina Square and Parkway Parade.

Scents Available: Vanilla Body Scrub, Lavender Body Scrub, Cherry Blossom Body Scrub, Ocean Body Scrub, Coconut Verbena Body Scrub, Strawberry Milk Body Scrub

What is Your Face Telling You?

Standard

Ever wonder why we have breakouts or acne appearing at various parts of our face? Similar to Chinese foot reflexology, certain points on the soles of our feet are linked/connected to specific parts of our body. In this case, it’s face to body. I came across this article and thought its an interesting finding 🙂

20121111-102237.jpg

Zone 1 & 3: Bladder & Digestive System — Improve your diet and drink more water.

Zone 2: Liver — Try cutting back on alcohol, heavy food or dairy. This area can also indicate a food allergy.

Zone 4 & 10: Kidneys — Make sure you’re keeping yourself hydrated with water and cut back on liquids that dehydrate you. This means nix the soda, coffee and/or alcohol.

Zone 5 & 9: Respiratory system — Those who smoke or have allergies tend to have acne here.

Zone 6 & 8: Kidneys — Dark circles are usually a result of dehydration. Drink up!

Zone 7: Heart — Check your blood pressure and make sure you’re not using makeup that irritates your skin.

Zone 12: Stomach — Consider a detox or adding more fiber to your diet to help with digestion.

Zone 11 & 13: Hormones — Stress and hormonal changes can sometimes be alleviated with more water and a few extra servings of dark, leafy greens but if breakouts in this area persistent, make an appointment with your doctor to look into a possible hormonal imbalance. Additionally, breakouts in this area also indicate when you are ovulating (and which side).

Zone 14: Illness — Can be a sign of your body fighting bacteria to avoid illness. Take a breather and drink plenty of fluids.

So the next time you breakout or notice dark under eye circles, look to your map (or shall we say face map).

Have you heard of face mapping before?

P.S. Please note that these are general guidelines. Just becuase you breakout on your nose doesn’t mean you have a heart problem. As with all medical issues, it is always best to see your doctor or dermotologist for a proper prognosis.

[Review] Only Aesthetics QPX Brazilian IPL

Standard

I did a first trial session at Only Aesthetics for $55. They say it’s QPX but the machine clearly states IPL.

What makes QPX technology different?
QPX™ Quad Pneumatic technology provides the highest clinical performance at lower energy than conventional IPLs. Therefore highest in its class for safety. Making it possible to treat even skin type I – !V without causing burn to the darker skin tone. This is all made possible because of the unique technology in every QPX product. This technology is patented and whilst other IPLs may claim similar performance, only QPX can deliver.

How other IPLs work
All IPL devices use a flash lamp (a bit like a powerful camera flash) to create the necessary light energy to remove hair. However QPX-based devices control this flash lamp in a way that is much more sophisticated than other less-advanced systems. In most other IPLs, the electrical current surges through the lamp in a wave and the colour of light varies during this pulse. At its peak, the light energy is too high and produces too much blue light that must be filtered out. Much of the energy is lost so treatments are carried out at unnecessarily high energy levels that can be uncomfortable on the skin, and can only safely be used by a trained therapist.

Quad Pneumatic technology
QPX technology solves this problem with unique circuitry that creates a constant pattern of electrical current to the lamp—in a ‘Quad Pnuematic Pulse’. This perfect energy level is continuously generated, so the most effective treatments are produced at far lower energy levels with no harmful energy that needs to be filtered out. Quad Pneumatic technology makes QPX systems easy to use as there are no complicated or costly accessories required for the different treatments or skin types.

In the room..
Treatment wise it was TOTALLY painless. I’ve never done brazilian IPL before so I can’t gauge if it’s more or less painful. But seriously I couldn’t feel a thing except see the flash of light everytime they zap. Amazing! I can only compared it to waxing which to me is tolerable but not the most pleasant of experiences.

After all that zapping is done (~5min), the technician leaves you to clean yourself up with a box of tissue and a some wet wipes. Not that I’m being princessy but when I go for my waxing, I don’t hafta clean up down there. And what a mess it was, there was so much ice cold gel (prolly numbed the area so much that I felt no pain) and I took forever to get it really clean. Prolly took longer than the zapping itself :/

No pictures, so bear with me..

Finally, I got myself cleaned up. I inspected the final result. One thing I noticed was it was definitely not as clean as waxing which the technician mentioned at the start of my treatment. Not only there were a couple of missed hairs, the end effect and feeling is much like shaving (although I’ve never shaved down there either before).

Signing up..
All in all, I quite like it so I signed for the package which works out to be slightly under 1k. (will be more if you require zapping of the crack). The package is a 2 year program. 1 session every 3-4 weeks for the first 6 months and 1 every 2 months thereafter. This works out to be 15-17 for the entire 2 year span @ $58-$66 per session. Totally reasonable if you ask me. You can also opt for 6 or 12 month interest free installment payment plans with selected credit cards. I used UOB.

BUT I’m totally miffed cos the sales consultant DID NOT mention the cheaper option (also a 2 year program) but just offered me the accelerated one which was ~$300 more. After emailing them, I got a call a couple of days later from their manager regarding this issue and they were willing to refund me in credits.

Basically they are claiming PERMANENT removal as opposed to a few years kinda permanent.

Whitening?
They have the option of adding a whitening serum (before IPL) and a mask (after IPL) for $27 per service per session. I think they have a package for this as well. Or if you prefer a DIY home kit for more regular application, they have a bottle of whitening serum for ~$180. In any case I will be trying it out @ my next session which will be my 3rd visit. Maybe use my credits? ;p

Other QPX services..
The most popular hair removal treatments there are for underarm, half leg & brazilian. Recently they are now offering this service for men (think Boyzilian) too!

[Review] Biotherm Lait Corporel anti-drying body milk

Standard

Back from a vacation from the land of smiles – thailand 🙂

this was a perfect opportunity for me to try all the sample products i have as they are all in small travel-friendly sizes.

i brought the Biotherm anti drying body milk with me as i know i will be sleeping in air condition environment..

with citrus extracts!

the formula is milky and thick, with a slight orangey colour and orange scent (due to the citrus extracts i supppose).

the milk is not too thick and i think the consistency is just nice. i am able to spread throughout my body easily, and its absorbed within minutes

guess which thigh has been applied?

just a comparision, you can see how my right fat thigh after application. looks more supple and healthy right?

i like how this pdt maintains the moisture throughout the night, and does not have a greasy feeling. the next day my skin is smooth and soft and not too dry from the air con.

in fact, i even applied it again in singapore in my non air con room last night. it is also quickly absorbed and does not leave any sticky feeling the next day. as if i did not put anything.
i recommend this for daily use.

[Review] Soap & Glory Flake Away

Standard

I Love a good scrub and always prefer to DIY instead of going to the spa. Somehow it doesn’t feel as clean and they don’t usually reach all the places as thoroughly as I would like.

20120515-225815.jpg

A superhero strength skin smoothing body polish with shea butter, sweet almond oil, peach seed powder, sea salt and sugar. Transforms your scaly legs from reptilian to radiant. Scented with our Original Pink™ fragrance combines fresh bergamot and mandarin, rose, jasmine, peach, strawberry, oakmoss, amber, woody notes and amber and warm vanilla notes on the bottom.

20120515-225831.jpg

20120515-225839.jpg
This is a serious body scrub, not one of these “i can hardly feel it, gentle” type scrubs. Looking at the exfoliating beads, you cant really tell but it has a thick rough texture which might be too harsh for some skin but i love this. But I find it especially good for elbows and heels cos most scrubs aren’t rough enough to slough away the dead skin. Another thing about the texture is that it’s easy to slap on and it sticks to your skin such that u don’t have to worry about it sliding off your legs when it’s wet.

20120516-163356.jpg
My skin feels soft with a nice light layer of oil so u can choose to skip applying your body lotion. I have use it sparingly and only reach for more product from the tub when the beads have dissolved on my body. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to wash off and may feel overly greasy cos of the oil so use it sparingly. Skin feels moisturized but not oily after rinse.

It also has the lovely scent of Miss Dior Cherie. It’s pretty strong and can last at least half a day fr me and on those days I’ll skip my perfume.

This is my 3rd tub btw ;p
